 Exploring the Hidden Himalaya

This book was jointly authored with the late Soli S. Mehta and was published by Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1990. The book was produced after a thorough research about the unknown peaks in the Himalaya and was well received. Second edition of this, thoroughly revised and updated till end of 1997,  was published by Indus publications, New Delhi in 1998.

 Trek the Sahyadris

The first and only guide to trekking and climbing in the Western Ghats. This has become a very popular publication for the range near Bombay  and around. Till date, five editions have been published (in 1977, 1979, 1988 and 1993, 1996, 2003). 

High Himalaya Unknown Valleys

This book was published by Indus Publication, New Delhi in 1993. It a compilation of my articles from the Himalayan Journal and includes few specially written articles as well. It contains 29 maps, 50 photographs and the book is a major reference for mountaineers, travellers and people with general interest in the Himalaya. Now in its fourth edition in 2000. 

Spiti Adventures in the Trans-Himalaya

The book contains full details about the area of Spiti, a relatively unknown valley in the Himachal Pradesh in the Indian Himalaya. It is based on my climbs and explorations in Spiti for many years. With sketch maps, colour and b/w pictures and many tables the book has been well received. Second edition published  in 1999. 

Meeting The Mountains

Collection of my travels, climbs and treks in the Indian Himalaya. It covers the lovely treks undertaken by the me before 1969, as a young student and all treks and expeditions after 1992. Thus the  book narrates the phase of the Himalayan climbing and trekking in the past and at present, thus giving a picture of what it may be in the future.It also contains articles about meeting several mountain personalities and my association with the Himalayan Club as an editor and administrator.

 With 50 b/w photos and 30 sketch maps it is an essential reference to mountaineers interested in the Indian Himalaya.

Published by Indus publications, New Delhi in 1999. 

A Passage to Himalaya (editor) 

This is the collection of best writings in the past 55 volumes of the Himalayan Journals (1929 to 2000), selected and edited by Harish Kapadia. Contains photos, sketch maps, book reviews, obituaries and letters with comments by the editor. Published by the Oxford  University Press, Bombay. in February 2001. 

Trekking and Climbing in Indian Himalaya  

Published  by Globetrotter (UK) as the first  adventure Guide on the Indian Himalaya , the book covers introduction to the Indian Himalaya, 25 specially selected routes in the range covering  Sikkim, Kumaun, Garhwal, Himachal Pradesh, Zanskar and Ladakh range. Each trek is supported by sketch map and graph. Every region has a special directory giving useful information. 10 peaks are  suggested with routes and approaches to climb. Complete with bibliography, environment considerations, photography suggestions and medical list. Published simultaneously in UK and USA. Published in July 2001. 

EDITORIAL EXPERIENCE 

Editor of the Himalayan Journal  since 1978

This is an international journal for mountaineers published by the Himalayan Club. Published since 1928 it has a long list of editors  beginning with Kenneth Mason and C.W.F. Noyce. It is one of the most celebrated journals for mountaineers and its 59th issue was published  in September 2003.

I have been associated with the journal as editor or assistant editor since 1978 (volume 35).  This journal requires a high level of mountaineering knowledge and literary capacity for its editor to perform. It is published for The Himalayan Club by Oxford University Press.

 

Compiler of the Himalayan Club Newsletter since  1978

This is an annual publication which contains all the news about Himalayan climbing and associated activities in the year.  Copies are sent to Himalayan Club members the world over.

OTHER  WRITINGS

Written more than 40 articles about Himalayan travel, trekking, and climbing. These have been published in the Himalayan Journal, the Indian Mountaineer and the Alpine Journal over many years. A synopsis of the entire Indian climbing scene for the Alpine Journal, as ‘Area Notes’, has been contributed for the past 15 years.

 Several contributions were made to the American Alpine Journal for almost a decade covering the news and aspects of the Himalaya.

 Several book reviews on mountaineering books written by me  have been published in various journals in India and abroad. Contributed chapters and articles to many books published  in Europe and England.
